A Midsummer Night’s Sueño Promises Eclectic Fashion in Forsyth Park

unnamedLocal designers and artists will grace the Forsyth Park fountain tomorrow evening with a unique fashion show designed to whisk patrons away into an incandescent phantasm of ancient mythology and modern Savannah flavor. A Midsummer Night’s Sueño Fashion Show (the brainchild of SCAD alum Leslie Walsh and Samson Smith) will feature garments and jewelry created entirely by local designers, including Mary Evelyn Gunn, Zachary Howell, Alexis Javier, Nicole Edge, Megan Sparks and Samantha Salas. The looks will walk down a runway encircling the Forsyth Park fountain, draped in the shadows of live oaks and awash with the projection art of Planetary Projections

The show represents the culmination of a 3-month-long scavenger hunt for the best the coastal Georgia area has to offer in fashion, jewelry design and, surprisingly, community outreach. Organizers Leslie Walsh and Samson Smith’s passion for the avant garde is superseded only by their drive to philanthropy. If you’re planning on attending, don’t forget to bring along gently used clothing to help support the charities Walsh and Smith have chosen to highlight: the Old Savannah City Mission, King’s Closet (an organization that provides clothing to foster children) and FreeTheGirls.org (a charity that donates bras to women in developing and third world countries).

Though Walsh told me the inspiration for A Midsummer Night’s Sueño largely came from romanticized symbols of ancient mythology (“the iridescence of the scarab beetle”) and an attraction to rich colors (“peacock feathers”), the evening’s emphasis is clearly on spotlighting local artistry and ambition. “We definitely want to emphasize the local. We really want to provide a platform for people who are here and make it so that people recognize Savannah as an art community. I believe Savannah is going up and up and up,” she says.

Vendors, artists, jewelry designers and local t-shirt design studio/gallery 13 Bricks are all expected to turn out some street fair flavor for pre-show guests, leading up to performances by Omingnome and Anitra Opera Diva and the Midsummer Night’s Sueño Fashion Show proper. Afterward, guests can attend the after-party at Ampersand Bar for more musical performances by MeteorEYES and Sunglow (present your Sueño ticket to get in free!) starting at 10:30pm.

The event starts at 7:30pm on Friday, August 29 at the Forsyth Park Fountain. Tickets are $15 at the park or $10 with a clothing donation.
